LOOKING IN THE MIRROR

Managing similarities in Executive Coaching Engagements

description

There is substantial research seeking to identify key competencies that contribute to effective executive coaching. The impact of coach-coachee matching based on similarities has been frequently investigated. There is also emerging literature and evidence regarding the key competencies associated with effective coaching across cultural and other dimensions of diversity, including race. Both streams of evidence and best practice are increasingly important as corporations and organizations focus increased effort and resources to developing more diverse leaders.

There is also research exploring aspects of within-group differences that may provide insight into when and how differences within similarities impact executive coaching engagements. As the number of executive coaches identified as members of under-represented groups increases, how do similarities between coach and coachee contribute to positive outcomes, how do those same similarities increase the challenge of achieving positive outcomes, and how might those similarities interfere with positive coaching outcomes. Framed through a candid look at his consulting journey, and sharpened by the experiences of participants, this session will explore the reactions of coaches being asked “what is it like being the only Black?”, and “finally, I get someone who understands!” Dr. Pennington will share emerging trends from ongoing interviews exploring the question of “what is it like working with someone who looks like you?”

As a result of the presentation, delegates are expected to be able to identify key dynamics of similarities that positively impact coaching engagements; key dynamics of similarities that negatively impact coaching engagements; strategies that effectively leverage the strengths and address the challenges of similarities; and recommended areas for further research.
